The Seedling Bank stories: Warrawong High School

Warrawong High School is a comprehensive, multicultural high school located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. The school received funding from The Seedling Bank in 2020 for their environmental project.
Funding was used for a rehabilitation project involving both students from the general population of the high school and from the Intensive English Centre – a separate part of the school that assists primarily refugee students in improving their English communication skills.
A large amount of plastic and other rubbish had to be removed from the site before planting. Some of the rubbish was buried and had to be dug out, lots of weeds too!
The project has been in progress for several months, small groups of students have been working together and planting as an ongoing activity.
The students planted subtropical rainforest trees and a range of other native shrubs and grasses. Planting in this very neglected and overgrown area will return native balance in the Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest area and create habitat for reptiles, birds and small mammals in the area.
