Help us plant 1 million trees in Greater Sydney
By Jennifer McMillan 10 November 2021
This year Sydney sites were postponed but we’ve been working with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to help Greater Sydney get one step closer to planting one million trees by 2022. Help us build a greener future. Get involved in the Everyone Plant One campaign and register your tree.
Since 1996, 26 million native trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted by over 5 million National Tree Day volunteers around Australia. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions in Sydney, Melbourne, and parts of Queensland, not everyone could connect with their community and plant a tree for this year’s National Tree Day. At Planet Ark we believe every day is Tree Day, that’s why we are encouraging everyone to get outside and plant a tree before the end of spring!
Our 2021 research found that 7 out of 10 Australians agree their individual actions can have a positive impact on global environmental issues such as climate change. The research was conducted on behalf of Planet Ark by Pollinate as part of The Pulse survey, a bi-annual quantitative study that measures environmental, social, and economic issues and concerns. The most significant findings included:
82% agree spending time in nature is good for physical and psychological wellbeing
75% agree living near green spaces with trees is important to them personally
69% agree spending time in nature increases their desire to protect the natural environment
After four months in lockdown for people living in Sydney, and nine months for the citizens of Melbourne – a dose of nature is what we all need. Our research also indicated Australian kids are not spending enough time in nature, with less than a quarter of those surveyed (23%) agreeing Australian children spend enough time outdoors.
Our call-to-action: get outside and connect with nature!
How can I get involved?

Do you live in Greater Sydney?
We’re working with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to help Greater Sydney get one step closer to planting one million trees by 2022. Schools and community groups in Greater Sydney looking to plant a minimum of 25 trees can apply for a grant through The Seedling Bank which will cover the cost of the trees. Find out more here.
For individuals interested in getting involved, you can join the Everyone Plant One campaign! Planting trees on your property provide many benefits such as attracting wildlife, shade, privacy, mental health improvements, community cooling and helping to mitigate climate change.
