Dutch Thunder Wildlife - COMMUNITY BUSH TUCKER GARDEN PLANTING DAY 3

Dutch Thunder Wildlife Rescue has partnered with the Community Team from Bunnings Yarrawonga and Many Mobs to build a Community Bush Tucker Garden which aims to promote sustainability in our community, preserve Indigenous culture, provide access to nutritious foods for all, foster community engagement and enhance our local biodiversity. This will be our forth planting day at this site. Many of our local schools and other community groups are involved in this project. We will have a focus on plants that would have grown in this area before it was populated and farmed thus restoring it to what is was for the people and the wildlife that live in the area. Some of the plants that have medicinal uses will be used at the local wildlife shelter in the treatment and rehabilitation of the animals in their care. The gardens themselves will become home to native bees among other insect and reptile life. With the addition of possible a pond or 'wet garden' frogs will also be catered for plus a drinking source for bird life. The area that is going to be used also has a number of dead box trees which are going to be made safe and made in to habitat trees for animals such as insects, birds and microbats. These plantings will take place over 3 days, the first date, which is this application is Wild Koala Day, this will be a public planting day. The second is in Schools Tree Planting week in July which will be for schools only then the last will be National Tree Planting Day on the 28th of July which will be a public event. All the native plants, tree guards and stakes will be sourced locally at an approx cost of $10 per unit including plant, guard and 2-3 stakes. Within this project we endeavour to push the boundaries of traditional education and provide an environment that encourages a high level of curiosity, creativity, and authentic engagement that will lead to the most incredible learning outcomes for all involved. An Indigenous Bush Tucker Garden will encourage children, and eventually the wider community to value inclusion, celebrate diversity, promote acceptance and understanding of traditional Aboriginal ways of life, as well as promote sustainability, conservation, biodiversity, whilst creating habitat for native plants and animals. It will have traditional uses for Aboriginal people – for food, medicine, and as raw materials. In the future we hope our Community Bush Tucker Garden can become the site for a 'Nature Classroom' for all the local kindergartens and schools to utilise. It will also become part of the 20 acre Native Sanctuary that has already been started by Dutch Thunder Wildlife with a number of massive native tree planting events in 2022 and 2023.
