Hume City Council - Sunbury Fields Tree Day Site Details

Hume City Council - Sunbury Fields

Victoria's basalt plains grasslands are amongst the most critically endangered ecosystems in Australia, due to historical clearance for agriculture and more recently urban development. Less than 1% of high-quality, species-rich grasslands now remain, when they once covered some 1,200,000 hectares. Council uses ecological burns to help manage its numerous grassland reserves, and this planting will follow on from a recent burn to open up the area. The aim is to enhance the diversity of indigenous species found at the site, and recreate pollinator habitat for native bees and butterflies. We will be planting mostly wildflowers and grasses, along with a few trees and shrubs to represent the former plant community.
