Greater Sydney has planted one million trees

By Pamela Jolly 17 November 2022

One million trees have been planted in greater Sydney months ahead of the end of 2022 target.

Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes, Anthony Roberts along with Camden Mayor Therese Fedeli planted the 1 millionth tree recently in a ceremony in a Camden park. The event celebrated considerable effort by councils, residents, community groups and organisations like Planet Ark working to increase green canopy cover and make the Department of Planning and Environment’s Greening our City priority, a success.

“While recent years have proven challenging, they have also given many of us more time to connect with our local community and surrounding nature,” said Paul Klymenko, Co CEO Planet Ark.

“Those in Greater Sydney have embraced the challenge of planting one million trees and will experience the benefits looking forward.

“Trees in urban areas provide shade, absorb pollutants, reduce runoff, attract wildlife, improve mental health and help to mitigate climate change.

The Planet Ark team and community members planted over eight thousand trees, shrubs and grasses for National Tree Day this year at a Fairfield City Council site. Planet Ark’s annual National Tree Day event helps to remind residents of the importance of connecting with nature and encourage them to get involved and out into their community.

“It was great to see so many individuals, families with young children and larger groups pitch in to plant a variety of natives local to the area,“ said Simone Horder, Tree Day Manager at Planet Ark.

Planet Ark looks forward to working together with the community to increase canopy cover and create a greener future for Greater Sydney.
