Mackay Regional Council Tree Day Site Details

Mackay Regional Council

Parks and Open Spaces (POS) identified the opportunity to implement a multi-year ‘greening’ initiative aimed at reinforcing the remnant vegetation along a 5.3km stretch of Goosepond Creek. In addition to increasing canopy cover within the urban footprint, expanding the width of the riparian vegetation will assist in restoring the health of this urban waterway. This greening initiative builds on previous efforts funded by Council to revegetate the lower reaches of Janes Creek immediately upstream of this section of Goosepond Creek undertaken in 2015 -16. It will also incorporate the established re-vegetation plantings along the southern embankment of the creek contained within the Junior Soccer Fields (MRC Sports Precinct). The second project being undertaken as part of the 2015 National Tree Day events. The aim of planting is to widen the protective stand of remnant / regrowth vegetation along the northern side of the waterway contained within the park, starting up steam (western end) and progressing downstream using the preclear regional ecosystem as a guide for species selection.
