Darlington Community Garden Tree Day Site Details

Darlington Community Garden

We expect the planting and landscaping to have an immediate and ongoing positive impact addressing a number of Shire objectives. In particular, improving the local environment for residents and wildlife, addressing the impacts of climate change and encouraging community wellbeing. The planting and rehydration of the landscape are expected to have a cooling effect through additional canopy and understory creation. The increase in ground moisture has the potential to positively impact fire risk, as in ground moisture levels are part of the metric that determines fire danger ratings. The project is expected to result in a significant increase in wildlife activity in the designated area and surrounds. This will include our 5 local frogs (including the Motorbike frog Litoria moorei), beneficial insects (dragonflies, butterflies, native bees including the Blue banded bee) and organisms (fungi, bacteria etc), bird and mammal life including the Carnaby's cockatoos who currently feed on the pine trees adjacent to the drain. Based on our 2024 planting / rehydration project, we expect an increase in community interaction and enjoyment of the newly planted space. By transforming this section of the clay pan into a natural garden waterway with flowering trees such as Corymbia Ficifolia we hope to create a new focal point for visitors to the Darlington Arts festival, markets, recreation and sporting activities. We also hope this project will lead to further engagement with Shire representatives to identify future opportunities for community education and participation around land regeneration / rehydration projects.
