Queanbeyan Landcare Inc Tree Day Site Details

Queanbeyan Landcare Inc

The planting of trees will help to repair the land which was impacted by a former quarry and has not previously been fully restored to its natural state. This project will also create linkages with the nearby Mount Jerrabomberra Reserve. The project will create a habitat for native species by attracting wildlife, including birds and native species. It is proposed to plant a range of different trees and shrubs covering: o Large trees (250): Eucalyptus rubida, mannifera ssp maculosa, polyanthemos, rossini, nortonii, melliodora (few, lower slopes only); Casuarina cunninghamiana (few, lower slopes only). (Note the locally occurring E. macrorhyncha considered but evident dieback (cavitation) observed during recent heat events.) o Medium trees (250): Callitris endlicheri; Casuarina verticilata; Acacia mearnsii and dealbata. o Medium shrubs (250): Bursaria spinosa; Kunzea ericoides; Acacia rubida, pycnantha, implexa and doratoxylon. Local volunteers will undertake ongoing maintenance of the plantings, ie. beyond the end date of this grant, including watering and replacing trees guards as required.

DIRECTIONS

The planting is the site of an old quarry situated off Southbar Road. The terrain is relatively steep and links the Queanbeyan urban area with the south side of the Mount Jerrabomberra Reserve. There is also an off-leash dog park, which is heavily used by residents every day. Plantings near the park will contribute to Queanbeyan's Urban Cooling Strategy, and will provide shade and wind protection once established. Also that the planting area adjoins an informal off-road cycle circuit which is used by local teenagers. The planting will be undertaken on a gentle to medium slope, largely north facing. We propose to plant locally-occurring native species suited to soil, aspect and terrain, with the aim of medium density, multi-layer cover of dry schelerophyll-box woodland species, larger and medium trees plus medium-tall shrubs.
