Cannonvalley Pony Club Inc.
Native Dog Creek and its surrounding causeways are currently vulnerable to excessive flooding, particularly during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 wet seasons. This has led to significant soil erosion, posing a threat to the stability of the land and infrastructure in the area, including those that have been reclaimed by the creek. The project aims to restore the natural vegetation along the creek and its causeways to reduce erosion, preserve native wildlife habitats, and protect the surrounding land from further degradation. Aims and Objectives: 1. Reduce soil erosion: Implement strategic revegetation to stabilise the soil along Native Dog Creek and its causeways, mitigating flooding and halting further soil erosion. 2. Enhance habitat for native wildlife: Select and plant native species that will support local wildlife, ensuring that the creek and its borders continue to provide an essential habitat for biodiversity. 3. Preserve infrastructure: Prevent the creek from encroaching into areas used for recreational and operational purposes, thereby protecting vital infrastructure from potential flood damage. 4. Collaborate with local groups: Work alongside Whitsunday Landcare and other local environmental organisations to identify and select the most suitable plant species for the area, ensuring long-term ecological benefits. 5. Ensure long-term sustainability: Develop a sustainable revegetation plan that secures the long-term health of the ecosystem, preserving the land for future generations without compromising the functionality of the reclaimed areas. By achieving these objectives, the project will contribute to the resilience of the Native Dog Creek ecosystem, safeguard local infrastructure, and promote a healthier, more sustainable environment for both wildlife and the surrounding community.
