Hunter Dry Rainforest Revival Oakhampton Tree Day Site Details

Hunter Dry Rainforest Revival Oakhampton

This is the first significant Dry Rainforest planting (1500m2) along the Hunter River for the Hunter Rainforest Revival Project 2025-209. Hunter Region Landcare Network (with partners MCC and HLLS) is launching a 5-year community education program to enable a groundswell of community members who become advocates for the regional restoration of DRF. Prior to colonisation a significant portion of the Maitland City Council area was covered in Dry rainforest (DRF). DRF lowland sections have been almost completely cleared of rainforest species since colonisation; the remnant rainforest is now restricted to inaccessible steep hill slopes and isolated degraded remnants. These on-ground projects will reconnect Maitland to a broad biodiversity network and accelerate biodiversity with rainforests. This planting will be one of a string of regenerating strategic dry RF connected patches across 20+ rural properties and 5 public sites restoring land in key floodplain and riparian areas designed to ensure ecological resilience. We will be testing the Hunter conceptual model for Floodplain Dry Rainforests in the Hunter Valley catchment developed by P. Wilson (2024) for recreation of lowland DRF vegetation community species.
