National Tree Day Case Studies - Planet Ark, Toyota and City of Sydney

Planet Ark, Toyota and City of Sydney

In 2011, Planet Ark and Toyota teamed up with the City of Sydney to host a community planting event at Sydney Park. The weather was great, volunteers were a plenty and the day was big success.

For the last three years, Planet Ark and Toyota have hosted a planting event at Sydney Park, thanks to the support of the City of Sydney. The focus of this year's National Tree Day event was a planting around Wetland 4, the park's largest wetland wildlife sanctuary.

The planting was designed carefully to complement the existing wetland with mixed plants that include some taller trees, shrubs and grasses.  The mix includes species found within natural wetland areas to provide greater habitat opportunities for wildlife and to provide shade to the popular picnic location.

Planting happened in a number of different groups throughout day, with plenty of time in between for volunteers to grab some lunch from the Lions BBQ, watch the native animal show, get their face painted or just sit and relax by the water. Plus there were speeches from Planet Ark CEO Paul Klymenko, Anthony Lucisano from Sydney City Toyota and our very special guest, Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore.

We've been back to see the how the site is doing a few months on and our plants and grasses are growing tall and strong. This time next year. the wetland will look like a beautiful green oasis.
