National Tree Day Case Studies - Coordinator Profile Katrina Kingston

Coordinator Profile Katrina Kingston

Name: Katrina Kingston

Council: Westonia Shire

This was your first year participating in National Tree Day - why did you decide to get involved?

Because it is a great way to get children out of the classroom and gain some practical skills coupled with knowledge.

What did your council do for National Tree Day?

We organised a tree planting day with the children at the local primary school.

What were the main benefits for your council of participating in National Tree Day?

To educate the children about nature and trees.

What was your biggest challenge in organising your National Tree Day event?

Communicating with the School’s administration staff.

What advice would you offer to others thinking about becoming a Tree Day Coordinator?

If you are planning to do an event with a school, start planning it with them months in advance.

And just for fun, if you were given the seed of a 'money tree', where would you plant it?

I would plant it in a third world country, and when the tree was mature enough, I would take cuttings and plant one in every country. It would be maintained and looked after by the people and not agencies.
